FILM, LITERATURE, DANCE & DRAMA

Bruiser Theatre Company: presents an online theatre production of Mojo Mickybo by Owen McCafferty

24th - 26th June 2021 at 7pm each evening online
Tickets available via Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mojo-mickybo-tickets-154078132843

Mojo Mickybo shows the friendship between two boys growing up in Belfast – a friendship that at first is immune to the sectarian violence taking place around them, but which nonetheless is ultimately destroyed by it.

Mojo and his mate Mickybo are two nine-year-old boys from opposing sides of the sectarian divide. They are 'thick as two small thieves', playing headers, being mouthy, building huts, spitting from cinema balconies and re-enacting their favourite movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. They are young cowboys in the making, with the violence of The Troubles only obliquely impacting on them – until finally their friendship is destroyed in a way that they only later come to understand.

This is pure, undiluted storytelling in Bruiser’s trademark dynamic physical style. Fast-paced, darkly funny and action-packed.

Despite venues remaining closed due to the ongoing pandemic, Bruiser is keeping theatre alive and accessible by releasing the production online.
Tickets are available now via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mojo-mickybo-tickets-154078132843

Lyric Theatre: presents,

AN EVENING WITH AN IMMIGRANT, written and performed by Inua Ellams, 15th – 19th June 2021.  Born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother in what is now considered by many to be Boko Haram territory, award-winning poet and playwright Inua Ellams left Nigeria for England in 1996 aged 12, moved to Ireland for three years, before returning to London and starting work as a writer and graphic designer.

Part of this story was documented in his autobiographical Fringe First Award-winning play The 14th Tale, but much of it is untold. Littered with poems, stories and anecdotes, Inua tells his ridiculous, fantastic, poignant immigrant-story of escaping fundamentalist Islam, experiencing prejudice and friendship in Dublin, performing solo at the National Theatre, and drinking wine with the Queen of England, all the while without a country to belong to or place to call home.

As part of the act of sharing stories and experiences of migration and global human movement across borders, An Evening with an Immigrant will coincide with Refugee Week 2021.  Age recommendation: 14+.  For tickets book at www.lyrictheatre.co.uk

SIGNED VERSIONS of Splendid Isolation Lockdown Dramas:  Last summer the Lyric partnered with BBC NI, & BBC Arts, supported by ACNI on a new exciting collaboration – Splendid Isolation: Lockdown Drama – a collection of five minute theatrical pieces exploring life in lockdown.  They recently received funding from the Department for Communities to provide signed versions of the show which are available now.

Filmed on location in accordance with social distancing guidelines over several weeks, the pieces explored the positive and negative aspects of social isolation and lockdown. The project was part of a wider national collaboration between BBC Arts, theatres and Arts Councils in each nation during a challenging time for the creative sector.  Each short film was broadcast on BBC Two Northern Ireland and afterwards on the BBC iPlayer where they are still available to watch until June.

Splendid Isolation went on to be nominated for an award by the Royal Television Society, of which we are all extremely proud.  Watch the signed versions at Splendid Isolation: Lockdown Dramas - Lyric Theatre

SADIE at the Lyric: available to watch now on BBC iPlayer at BBC iPlayer - Lights Up - Sadie

The international premiere of an unflinching new play from David Ireland centres on a Belfast woman reflecting on her turbulent life amidst the troubled past. Sharp-tongued cleaner, Sadie, develops an intense, dysfunctional yet passionate relationship with a much younger man triggering a psychological showdown with the remnant demons of her past. She confronts these ghosts, calling out their contribution to the path life took her down. Expect challenging scenes through painful and harrowing subjects and shocking consequences.  Please note, this production contains strong language throughout and scenes that some viewers may find disturbing.  Visit www.lyrictheatre.co.uk

Kabosh: Previously untold stories of women as a tool of war are the subject of ‘The Shedding of Skin’, the new play from Kabosh which will have four online screenings from Tuesday 15 - Friday 18 June.

Written by Vittoria Cafolla and directed by Paula McFetridge, ‘The Shedding of Skin’ was created in response to the work of Ulster University Drama lecturer Dr Lisa Fitzpatrick, who has been researching sexual violence in conflict for many years.  Dr Fitzpatrick wanted to explore how her research material could be developed into a creative project and shared with a broad range of audiences, humanising victims and redressing the imbalance of stories from conflict being told with a predominantly male perspective.

Kabosh will provide a list of resources and further information which will enable audience members to take action about the issues raised in ‘The Shedding of Skin’, whether by raising awareness or by supporting one of the charities which works in this field.

The cast of ‘The Shedding of Skin’ features Vicky Allen as Tereza, Louise Mathews as Ruth, Catriona McFeely as Sinéad and Shannen McNeice as Sam.  The play will be filmed at the Brian Friel Studio, Queen’s University, Belfast and screened online over four days from Tuesday 15 - Friday 18 June, supported by a range of themed panel discussions exploring issues raised by the production. *‘The Shedding of Skin’ includes sensitive content and is recommended for people aged 16 years and over.*

Tickets for ‘The Shedding of Skin’ are £5 per person and can be booked now via www.kabosh.net

Causeway Coast and Glens: an original piece of music entitled ‘Strings of Heaven’ has been released by local harp players to celebrate 1500 years since the birth of Colmcille.  The ‘Colmcille 1500’ project, supported by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Museum Services, highlights the significant connection between the life of the revered early Christian saint and the Causeway Coast & Glens area.

Also known as St Columba, Colmcille left his mark on the landscape in the North West and is remembered in Ireland and Scotland as a unifying figure for his love of Gaelic culture and the natural world.

The video and composition collectively capture the beautiful landscape and significant landmarks associated with his life alongside the harping heritage of the area which can be traced back to when this ancient art was central to Gaelic society and ecclesiastical ceremonies.

Fittingly, the first performance of ‘Strings of Heaven’ was recorded at St Aidan’s Church in Magilligan, the site of a church originally founded by Colmcille in the middle of the 6th Century. St Aidan’s is also the burial place of Dennis Hempson, the last of the great harpers. Dennis lived in Magilligan and performed at the Belfast Harp Festival in 1792 before his death at the remarkable age of 112 in 1807. He played the famous ‘Downhill Harp’ made by Cormac Ó Ceallaigh of Ballinascreen and sponsored by the Earl Bishop, Fredrick Hervey and the beautiful Mussenden Temple is also featured in the video.

Composed by harper, Nodlaig Ní Bhrollaigh with vocal soloist, Aoife Nig Uiginn of Scoil Ruaidhrí Dall, this new creative community initiative led by Glór Dhún Geimhin, brings together harpers from Scoil Ruaidhrí Dall, Dungiven, Hempsey Harp School, Garvagh, the Causeway Harp School, and Ballycastle Harp School. This artistic piece showcases our shared heritage and the remarkable harping revival witnessed across Causeway Coast and Glens in recent times.

The video is available to view now at https://niarchive.org/projectitems/colmcille-1500-strings-of-heaven.

University of Atypical: University of Atypical presents their new exhibition, I Want To Believe, as part of Belfast Photo Festival 2021, featuring work by David Vintiner & Gem Fletcher. With technology evolving at an unprecedented rate, further change is imminent. This project documents a critical moment in time as we enter the next chapter in human evolution.

The ideas explored in these images demonstrates how optimising our brains and bodies could revolutionise and redefine humanity. As human architects, we are limited only by our imagination.

Void:  is now reopened to the public at their new location at 10 Waterloo Place, Derry-Londonderry.

Void Gallery is delighted to present CHOREOGRAPH, the first solo exhibition of Elizabeth Price in Northern Ireland, from 22 June – 21 August 2021.  Price’s distinctive film works inhabit the digital world using computer animated voices, graphics and a saturated videography that give the works a dystopic sensibility, exploring the human experience from industrialisation to the digital age.

The films are anthropological, often exploring mundane objects and imbuing them with a relevance, and situating them within an historical moment.  Emerging from this period of lockdown, where technology became our means of connection to the world, Price’s work embodies this notion of the cognitive harmony between the body and the machine. The title CHOREOGRAPH, a term derived from the Greek words: dance (chorus) and to write (graphy) is a reference to how the multi-screen works synchronise in the space aligning with the rhythms of the music, dance and writing and narrative that unfolds in the pieces.

How to book: visitors can attend the gallery space without booking in advance - with the exception of groups of more than 6 attendees. VOID will monitor attendance to ensure that they maintain a safe number of visitors at all times.
