Belfast Photo Festival’s Honeymoon Phase
London artist, Juno Calypso’s photographic self-portraits, taken during a recent clandestine one-woman stay at a Pennsylvanian honeymoon motel, receive their first Northern Ireland airing at the Golden Thread Gallery in collaboration with the Belfast Photo Festival.
Calypso is acknowledged as one of the current generation of young UK artists who is shaping the future of photography.
Her current exhibition, ‘The Honeymoon Suite’, features a series of witty and edgy photographs of the artist, posing as a fictional persona, taken in the lurid surroundings of one of America’s out-of-town love hotels, unchanged since the 1960s. The intricately-staged self-portraits challenge our views of gender and identity through humour and courageous vulnerability.
The exhibition, which runs at Belfast’s Golden Thread Gallery until 22nd July, is one of the centrepieces of the 2017 Belfast Photo Festival. The festival, with its theme this year of sexuality and gender, continues until 30th June and offers a wide range of exhibitions, talks, workshops, screenings, masterclasses and tours in venues around Belfast.
The Golden Thread Gallery and the Belfast Photo Festival are funded by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
