Gavin O’ Connor has joined the Arts Council of Northern Ireland as Arts Development Officer responsible for Youth Arts. Gavin brings to the job more than 20 years’ working experience in the voluntary and community sectors.
In relation to Youth Arts, he has ten years’ leadership and specialist involvement gained through his time as Director of WheelWorks, an internationally-renowned organisation aiming to increase the artistic, social and cultural inclusion of Children and Young People in urban and rural communities who experience barriers to participating in the arts.
Gavin also helped to found Young at Art, the international Children’s Festival, and initiated Sticky Fingers, the Early Year’s arts organisation. He was a Board member of the Community Arts Forum for seven years, serving as Vice Chair for two years and Chair for two years.
The ten years spent with WheelWorks enabled Gavin to develop extensive knowledge and experience of the sector. Much of this has been gained through direct involvement on practical and developmental levels with organisations and agencies that support the Youth Arts Sector across Northern Ireland within the community, voluntary and statutory sectors and Government Departments.
As a father he has personally experienced the positive contribution the arts can make to children and young people’s personal, social, intellectual, creative and emotional development.
