Northern Ireland musicians to perform at prestigious folk festivals
Talented Northern Ireland musicians to join the line up at the world renowned Celtic Connections and Folk Alliance music festivals as part of the HORIZONS programme supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
As a direct result of recent exposure at WOMEX 14, an international networking platform for the world music industry, musicians from Northern Ireland will perform in next year’s Celtic Connections and Folk Alliance music festivals as part of the HORIZONS programme. Horizons is a new partnership bringing together the wealth of musical and cultural traditions of England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Banjo ace, singer and composer from Coleraine, Damien O’Kane, will take on the stage of Celtic Connections in January 2015 alongside Declan O'Rourke, Karine Polwart, Lewis & Leigh and Kate Rusby on the Horizons stage. Damien’s exceptional talent and Northern Irish material earned him The Spiral Earth Awards for ‘Best Instrumental Album 2012’.
Also, following hot on the heels of her recent critically acclaimed album, All the Ways You Wander, singer and fiddle player, Bernadette Morris, originally from Tyrone, will perform at the Folk Alliance festival in Kansas USA in February 2015 as well as captivating NI singer songwriter, Ciaran Lavery.
As a result of attending Womex, Generator NI has become partners in the Horizons initiative and will provide additional high visibility showcasing and marketing opportunities for Northern Ireland artists and businesses attending Folk Alliance, Kansas USA.
Maria McAlister, Arts Development Officer for Traditional Arts, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, commented: “This year’s visit and artists showcase at WOMEX by the Horizons partners was an outstanding success resulting in three fine musicians flying the flag for Northern Ireland in two of the world’s most prestigious folk festivals in early 2015. The Arts Council is delighted to be a partner in Horizons and we look forward to developing the programme further to promote music from the UK and Ireland in the international market.”
