The Arts Council of Northern Ireland sends its warmest congratulations to Pádraigín Ní Uallachaín on being awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Traditional Music Award at the 2018 TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards.

Padraigin is an Irish Music scholar, writer and performer with a high profile on the Traditional Music scene particularly in the singing of songs in Irish. She has recorded 8 albums of traditional Irish songs and published a much acclaimed book on the songs and traditions of Oriel.

The Arts Council has supported Pádraigín Ní Uallachaín on a number of occasions since 2002. She was the first and only female major awardee within traditional arts and in 2012 was supported to record a collection of songs for children in English in collaboration with a visual artist.  In 2013, she was also supported to to carry out in-depth research in Irish song collections in Dublin and Belfast libraries with a view to preparing the songs for recording and publication.

She is seen as a source of new and interesting traditional material for younger, emerging artists, and the songs she will unearth and breathe new life into will enrich the current repertoire for performing folk and traditional singers.

The Gradam Ceoil TG4 2018 gala concert and award ceremony will take place in the Belfast Waterfront on February 4th, 2018 and will be broadcast live on TG4 from 9.30pm.
