Alana Barton – Artist of the Month, February 2022

Alana Barton is a figurative painter, based in Belfast. Alana studied at Ulster University, graduating in 2016. In 2019 she won the Northern Ireland Young Artist of the Year competition. Alana’s artwork explores childhood, family, and relationships, through paintings that have both figurative and abstract elements, and which use movement and vibrant colour to convey a sense of surreal, dream likes states and alternative realities.

‘Tender’ is part of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland collection. It depicts a child being held by her father, and is part of a recent body of work titled Habitat - a collection of paintings inspired by art made by families at home.
