Artist of the Month, August 2026 - Maya Todd

Maya Todd is an artist, designer and researcher from Belfast, who has studied at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. Her practice is driven by the desire to create 3-dimensional textile forms and sculptural surfaces, with ideas developed through experimentation. Her work combines in depth research with process-led ideas that are strongly influenced by the fibres and materials she is using at the time.

‘This is Not a Chair’ is part of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Collection. The design was created from an artificially generated image of a chair using prompts drawn from the artist's memories, whilst the physical panels were crafted using a ‘hacked’ 1980s knitting machine. The work merges old-world techniques with contemporary technology and challenges our perceptions of reality and the evolving role of craft in an increasingly adigital landscape.
