Artist of the Month, June 2026 - Sheena Devitt

Sheena Devitt studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art, later completing a one-to-one apprenticeship in stone letter carving in Mid Wales, funded by The Jerwood Foundation. She has been a professional visual artist and stone sculptor since 2006, now working from her home studio in Co Down. She is an elected member of The Royal Society of Sculptors and Sheena’s works are held in many important public and private collections.

‘The Language of Trees’ is part of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Collection. The piece is inspired by the book The Mother Tree by ecologist and scientist Dr Suzanne Simard, which is about the symbiotic relationships between trees, other plants, and mycorrhizal fungi, connected by unseen underground networks. The marble was hand carved using a mallet and chisel and then worked with diamond abrasive pads.
