Obituary: Eithne Vallely

The Arts Council of Northern Ireland deeply regrets the passing of Eithne Vallely.

A key figure in Irish traditional music, Eithne made significant contributions to encouraging the next generation of players through the founding of the award-winning Armagh Pipers Club in 1966 with her husband Brian. The club’s accolades including the Seán Ó Boyle Award, Gradam Ceoil TG4 Gradam Aitheantais and the BBC Folk Awards Good Tradition Award, the Pipers Club has maintained musical excellence alongside community outreach and mentorship.

A renowned fiddle player, Eithne remained at the centre of the Irish traditional music scene in her home Armagh, across Ireland and beyond for decades. Many had the joy of playing alongside her and learning from her.
