Lauren Gibson – Artist of the Month, May 2022
3rd May, 2022
Our Artist of the Month for May 2022 is Lauren Gibson
Lauren Gibson is a multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Belfast, whose practice consists of illustration, paint, surface design, and both hand and machine embroidery. Lauren studied at the University of Ulster, graduating with a BA Hons degree in Fine Art. Memory and the landscape are running themes throughout Lauren’s work. She is interested in how shapes, patterns and objects have the ability to resurface old memories.
Her painting “Uncle Dee” is part of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s collection. This painting depicts a scene from her grandparents’ house, which was recently boarded up and knocked down. The painting acts as a celebration and recollection to generations of her family, representing their memories, livelihoods and experiences in the house. The birthday boy in the painting is her Uncle David, who goes by the name ‘Dee’ and he is sat with his siblings at the table. This painting was exhibited at Lauren’s degree show in 2021 and has also been exhibited in the Emergence V exhibition at Queens Street Studios in February 2022.
