Born and based in Belfast, Leah Davis graduated with a degree in fine art from The Belfast School of Art in 2021. She is currently artist in residence at the Duncairn Centre for Culture and Arts in Belfast. Leah is a contemporary figurative painter. Her practice explores the essence of people, exploring character through body language, gesture, and interactions, and the relationship between the figure and the external space. Her paintings intend to reflect great intimacy and vulnerability through the figure and how it correlates with the negative spaces and exposed areas in the painting.
“Luke” is part of the Arts Council Northern Ireland Collection. This specific painting was part of Leah’s Belfast School of Art end of year degree show in 2021 and was subsequently exhibited at the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts 140th Annual Exhibition at the Ulster Museum. The painting reflects the casual intimacy that exists between the artist and the model, who are often family and friends. The painting captures a moment where the subject is relaxed and seemingly unaware of the artist’s gaze.
