Major award for adapted trombone which enabled NI musician to play music again following a stroke

17th April, 2025

A bespoke design of an accessible trombone bracket and support stand system by instrument maker, Michael Rath, has won a major award, in the Enabling Equipment category, at the One Hand Musical Instrument Trust Conference (OHMI) and Award Ceremony, held in Birmingham City University last month.

A silver trombone is fixed to a stand to enable the player to not have to hold it thus freeing up the hand to move the trombone.

This trombone was designed in 2020 for Northern Ireland based brass educator and freelance trombonist, Willie McLean, following a severe stroke he had in 2017 that left him with left arm paralysis. Micheal Rath’s ingenious design and craftmanship enabled Willie to play again. The commissioning of the instrument was supported by funding through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the win, musician, Willie McLean said, “You can only imagine how proud I was to see my instrument on the screen in the final selection in the Enabling Equipment category and just overjoyed and surprised when Mick Rath's name was called out and as Mick wasn't in attendance, I accepted the award on his behalf. It was a very proud moment for me to accept this as Rath trombones are the best made and the best to play – they are the finest most beautiful instruments. I am so thankful to Mick’s ingenious design to enable me to perform again.”
Ciaran Scullion, Head of Music and Opera, at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, added, “The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is committed to the development of our artists and offering opportunities to support them in their professional musical careers. We were delighted to offer funding to musician Willie McLean to enable him to commission the design of an adapted instrument. It’s heartening that this instrument has not only enabled a musician to keep performing following a life-changing event, but it has also won a very significant award. Well done to all involved!”

The award-winning trombone has a stainless-steel bracket, designed and manufactured by Michael Rath, that clamps easily to the main bell stay of the trombone using two hexagonal head screws. A clearance hole through the centre of the main head of the bracket allows the trombone to slide comfortably over the stand spindle. This is attached to an adapted heavy-duty cymbal stand and ensures the trombone is at the correct angle for the player, with height and angle are adjustable.
