Obituary: Gordon Lucy
28th September, 2026
The Arts Council has learned with regret of the death of historian and writer Gordon Lucy (1956-2026) who worked for many years until recently with the Ulster-Scots Community Network.
Gordon produced resource material relating to the people, history and themes in the Ulster-Scots tradition which will serve as thorough introductions as well as signposts to others for years to come. This aspect of the Network's activity was supported by the Arts Council for many years.
Educated at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen and a Modern History graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, Gordon brought extensive knowledge and a lifelong interest in history to his work as a researcher, writer and educator.
His publications included The Ulster Covenant, The Great Convention and Varieties of Scottishness, which explored the relationship between Ulster and Scotland. Through his writing, talks and work with the Ulster Society and the Network, he helped bring our shared history and traditions to a wide audience.
He was a diligent researcher and a brave thinker, a generous and warm companion and friend, as well as a sharp mind. His contribution to the understanding and appreciation of Ulster-Scots history and culture, helping others connect with the heritage, represents an enviable and enduring legacy. To paraphrase the poet John Hewitt, his quiet voice was not in vain. He will be greatly missed.
Gordon is survived by his sisters and wider family circle.
