Sinéad Fagan – Artist of the Month, January 2023
3rd January, 2023
Our Artist of the Month for January 2023 is Sinéad Fagan

Sinéad Fagan is a ceramicist currently living and working in West Cork. She has trained with the Craft Council of Ireland in Kilkenny and graduated from the Crawford College of Art and Design in 2011. In her final year, she jointly won the Lavit Gallery/ Cork Arts Society’s Student of the Year Award. Sinéad has exhibited her work at international shows in South Korea, China, Slovenia and the UK and exhibits regularly within Ireland.
'Underwater Cavern' Halo Vessel is part of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland collection. The colours and markings are achieved by using found objects like wire and organic materials like local seaweeds and grasses. These are soaked in colouring oxides before being wrapped around the work and placed in the saggar. Coloured fumes are released from these objects during the firing, seeping into the ceramic piece's surface. The resulting effects are abstract: tree lines in the distance, reflections in a lake’s surface, sunset horizons, and stormy rain clouds, reminiscent of the Irish rural landscape and the changing weather patterns.
'Underwater Cavern' Halo Vessel 2020 won the Sculpture Prize at the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts (RUA) in Belfast in October 2021.
