The critically acclaimed Tinderbox Theatre Company’s adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s timeless tragedy Yerma is set to make its premiere this March at Centro Nacional de las Artes Delia Zapata Olivella, Bogotá, Colombia. This adaptation of Yerma sold out its four-week run at the Lyric Theatre as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival back in 2024.

The production, supported by British Council Colombia, will run from 13-15 March and explores the heartbreaking story of a young woman trapped by societal expectations and personal anguish. Tinderbox Theatre Company will present this classic to a Colombia audience offering a powerful Irish focused interpretation of Lorca’s masterpiece.

Tinderbox Theatre Company’s principal funder is the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Gilly Campbell, Director of Arts Development at the Arts Council commented,

“The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is proud to support Tinderbox Theatre Company. The immense value of showcasing work created in Northern Ireland on an international stage cannot be overstated and helps put Northern Ireland on the map for all the right reasons. Congratulations to all involved and we wish the entire cast and crew every success as they fly the flag for NI arts abroad.”

The adaptation brings a sharp comedic edge, drawing on the dysfunction of a typical Irish family. The audience is invited inside a family party, full of humour, tension, and chaos, where laughter often masks deeper struggles, creating a rich blend of light and dark.

Patrick J O'Reilly, Artistic Director for Tinderbox Theatre Company, shared his excitement ahead of the premiere,

"We are so excited to tour Lorca's Yerma to the Centro Nacional de las Artes Delia Zapata Olivella in Colombia. Our incredible cast has been working tirelessly to bring this timeless tragedy to life. Despite being nearly, a century old, Yerma remains relevant today, as it explores themes of marriage, motherhood, and societal expectations - issues that resonate deeply in modern society.

This production challenges traditional Irish values and confronts the pressures placed on women. The opportunity to bring theatre performances created in Belfast to International audiences is incredibly important to celebrate and recognise the talent and artistry we have on the island.  It's a feverish mix of passion and desire.  Yerma is more than just a play - it’s an emotionally charged experience.”
